Hey, nice to see you here, Aborn! I actually mentioned you a long time ago in one of these topics. I remembered when you did your top 100 albums project, your highest ranked Zappa album was Absolutely Free, which is kind of an unusual choice for best Zappa album (not a bad choice, mind you; it is a fantastic album).

You're right about Civilization Phaze III, I did bring that one up on Raetsel_Lapin's music topic not too long ago.

As for writeups, the Tumblr actually doesn't have any writeups. I used to do the writeups with SmartMuffin in these topics and obviously the old topics have all purged (I have 90% of the writeups saved on my PC and my external hard drive, though). GMUN's site has a few of the old topics saved, however. You can check out the previous topic here, for instance:

Also, you can check out writeups for Zappa songs I've done in order of release on Information Is Not Knowledge, my Frank Zappa board I linked to in the opening post. I was planning on doing the entire catalog but I didn't make it further than "Pygmy Twylyte" from Roxy & Elsewhere. I do still plan on finishing that project eventually, though. Unlike the Song of the Day writeups, these writeups were meant to be purely informative, so I didn't insert my own opinions into them. They were less "OMG this guitar solo is awesome!" and more "this guitar solo is over two chords."

I will say that if you want to learn stuff about music theory, the SotD and IINK writeups don't have much to offer, though. I did get a bit more into the technical stuff in IINK than I usually did in SotD, but I'm far from a music expert. While it's not Zappa-related, if you want to read writeups that teach you stuff about music theory (particularly time signatures), I recommend MycroProcessor's Odd Time VGM of the Day Tumblr. Also, for a long time, I've been toying with the idea of creating a website where I list the entire Zappa catalog and post all the SotD writeups Muffin and I have done over the years, as well as YouTube links to all the songs (if they are available). It would be a MASSIVE undertaking (Muffn and I started doing this in 2013) ^_^; I think it would be really cool, though. It would also be helpful in determining which songs Muffin and I have discussed and which ones we've never touched on - it's become bit difficult to see the forest through the trees after all these years and so many writeups. Unfortunately, when I tried to create an HTML website years ago, it didn't work - there was a problem with my proxy server or something. Well, we'll see if I end up doing something with this idea.

It tried new things and though some of it didn't work, the stuff that did was incredible in my opinion.

while i still haven't seen last jedi so i can't comment on that, it's interesting that this is exactly how i would describe return of the jedi (which you called "super disappointing after empire," which i agree with).

like, the emperor/vader/luke scenes are probably some of the best in the original trilogy, but you also have to sit through 60 hours of ewok bullshit if you watch the movie.

yeah, the music/iconsience topics were pretty good in the late '00s. realo could be annoying in music discussions (he once said i "didn't get hip hop" just because i said blackalicious was one of the best groups in the genre or something) but i still liked talking music with him. he often came up with crazy reasons for loving music that literally nobody else on earth was talking about lol

and yeah, talking music with giggs, seg and GFK was cool for sure (even if i probably disagreed with giggs more often than i agreed with him).

lol scott adams. apparently, if you google image search "scott adams" you get photoshopped pictures of him in a nazi uniform at the top now. but the funny part is that he's literally threatening to destroy google because of this in one of his latest podcast episodes. "i'm the last person you want to piss of," "i will come up with more trouble for google than they ever have in the history of the company," etc.

i agree with red sox that another games contest would be cool.

back in the day i would slightly prefer a character battle because it would be accompanied by the fanfiction project, which obviously isn't a thing when there's a games contest. but nowadays the fanfiction project is long gone, as well as everyone who participated in it (except sir chris), so that isn't a factor anymore.

man, i adore tim follin and i like the ghouls 'n' ghosts intro, but there's a ton of his other tracks i would pick before landing on that one. i get that you didn't have access to the full follin catalogue when you made your pick, as you explained, though.

actually, the more i listen to follin music, the more i get the feeling it's really geoff follin i adore tbqh. not sure if it's a coincidence that it seems like all the tim soundtracks i love (like the silver surfer soundtrack) were co-composed by geoff, and the tim soundtracks i don't love as much (like the C64 version of ghouls 'n' ghosts soundtrack) were not co-composed by geoff.

this theory also makes me feel better about tim's "video game music sucks and music played by real instruments is superior" comments!!
